Support for Serving Armed Forces personnel and their families

Who we are:

The SSAFA VCJS Support Service is committed to giving veterans and their families a service that delivers. Our aim is to ensure that we offer a recognised and consistent service nationwide whilst meeting our five strategic objectives: effective support, awareness and understanding, sustainable resource, and collaborative working.

It is vital that the service we provide within the Criminal Justice System has a proactive approach and supports all of the Armed Forces community, no matter what the circumstances. Armed Forces community includes all serving and ex-serving personnel from the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Air Force whether regular or reservists, national service and families.

What we do:
Our network of in-reach volunteers provides advice and information - not only to those in custody, on probation or in the community, but also to their families. The support offered is non-judgemental and holistic and includes:

Research into Loneliness and Social Isolation of Military Widows and Widowers

Academics are looking for military widow(er)s to take part in a survey on loneliness and social isolation. Academics from Northumbria University are looking for individuals whose partners have died in the UK Armed Forces or after their service, to take part in new research into loneliness and social isolation.
The project, developed by Northumbria University in collaboration with the War Widows’ Association, aims to understand military widows’ experiences of social isolation and loneliness, identify the services available to military widows, and examine their unmet needs.

There are almost 15,000 military widows and widowers in the UK today. This study will inform national debate and lead to the development of policy recommendations and guidance for improved service provision.

Immigration Fees - Public Consultation

The Ministry of Defence and Home Office have set out a draft policy proposal to waive fees for non-UK Service Personnel who meet certain criteria when applying for settlement in the UK at the end of their service in the UK Armed Forces. The consultation invites interested parties to answer a number of questions in relation to the proposal.

The Government welcomes comment from all individuals and groups from across the United Kingdom who have an interest or view on the policy proposal. The responses to the consultation, including any recommendations for changes to the draft policy, will be carefully considered by ministers before the policy is finalised.

The closing date for the consultation is 11:59pm on 7 July 2021.

The Armed Forces Memorial and the Roll of Honour: A Guide for Bereaved Families

For guidance for the bereaved families of service personnel and veterans and information about the Armed Forces Memorial and the Roll of Honour

The Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire contains the names of members of the UK Armed Forces, Regular and Reserve, who have died on duty since 1948.

The Memorial was dedicated in 2007 and included almost 16,000 names. Each year, the Armed Forces Memorial Naming Panel, chaired by the Defence Services Secretary, supported by senior members of each Service and a senior medical adviser, considers the names of serving service personnel who have died during the preceding year in order to determine those who meet the necessary criteria to be included on the Memorial. A service for families is held at the National Memorial Arboretum, usually in July, to commemorate those personnel.
