Brunei: PCMF weight management clinic & the importance of a balanced diet

Balanced diet

A healthy balance diet is important to maintain good health and can help you feels your best. It also protects you against many chronic noncommunicable diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

You should try to eat:

1. At least 5 portions of a variety of fruits and vegs

2. High fibre starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice and pasta

3. Dairy fibre starchy food, for example potatoes, bread, rice and pasta

4. Eat beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein

5. Unsaturated oils and spreads

6. Plenty of fluids

Understanding calories

When we eat and drink more calories than we use up, our bodies store the excess as body fat and may put on weight if we continue.

An average man needs around 2,500 kcal a day to maintain a healthy body weight.

An average woman needs around 2,000 kcal a day to maintain a healthy body weight.

These values depend on age, size and levels of physical activity, among other factors.

To maintain a steady weight, the energy we put into our bodies must be the same as the energy we use though normal bodily functions and physical activity.

Being overweight

If you're overweight, losing weight has many health benefits. Making small, simple changes to what and how much you are eating, and drinking can really help you lose the pounds.

You can use this website to calculate tour Body Mass Index https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-weight/bmi-calculator/

You can use a weight loss app to help you access a weight loss plan https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/lose-weight/

PMCF also offers a weight management clinic. You simply have to book in at the reception.

There are also lots of group exercises within the community. Tune in to BFBS radio for more info or for the ladies subscribe to BFB wives page on FB to get updates.
